Commuter Chaos after Rail Fire

Commuters were caused further chaos in London last week, Thousands of rail passengers faced severe disruption to their journeys home after a fire shut lines in and out of London Bridge station.

An exclusion zone was set up and remained in place from Wednesday last week until Thursday morning as three cylinders inside the workshop were cooled, Southeastern, Southern and First Capital Connect services to London Bridge, Cannon Street, Charing Cross and Waterloo East were all affected..

Victoria over ground was then left unable to deal with the increased number of commuters diverting their journey’s through it in a desperate attempt to get home

The incident, about three miles from London Bridge, took place underneath the rail line to the station.

Transport for London said free buses were running from London Bridge and valid train tickets would be accepted, but the number of commuters requiring the service was in far too great a demand, for it to prove any where near a successful alternative.

Victoria station was closed and entrances to the station shut as a “crowd control measure”.

Commuters were complaining that there was nothing they could do and that announcements were not clear and in most cases, given the queues they were unable to hear them anyway.

All this left many people seeing the advantages of driving into work with the flexibility and comfort it can offer.

New Parking Enforcement Laws

Parking enforcement laws are due to change this autumn.

As it stands at the moment motorists can avoid paying fines if they drive off before attendants or wardens fix the penalty notice to their car.

But new legislation will come into place which will mean that motorists will no longer be able to dodge parking tickets by driving off.

Despite a recent High Court ruling against Transport for London backing drivers who had driven away before a penalty notice had been fixed to a car, new rules being introduced under the Traffic Management Act this autumn will allow fines to be sent to motorists through the post.

The act will require that attendants or wardens provide clear proof that an offence was committed, this shouldn’t prove too difficult as many use digital cameras to justify the tickets they issue and no doubt many more will now follow suit.
