Decrease in congestion on UK roads

The past two years have seen a dramatic fall in traffic congestion levels in the UK, according to a report by the AA and road information company Trafficmaster.

The drop can be directly attributed to effects of the recession, with rising unemployment and an increase in people working from home being principal causes.

At the same time, there has been an increase in traffic congestion on Fridays, end-of-term days and bank holidays, as more people have been taking holidays in the UK instead of abroad.

The report was based on information gathered over five years by Trafficmaster and an AA/Populus poll of 75,000 drivers. The data showed that the trend of increasing congestion over the past 20 years was broken for the first time in the post-credit crunch period, with the last two years showing dramatic drops in congestion levels on motorways and trunk roads.

The data showed a 15% fall in rush-hour congestion, in part caused by the loss of jobs by commuters over the last year, and by the greater number of people working from home to save on travel costs (a fifth of commuters). Additionally, 14% of the those polled said they chose public transport while 12% shared cars to save money.

The AA’s president Edmund King emphasized the need to keep investing in road infrastructure, so that when the economy is thriving again there will be a network able to support the greater number of cars that are bound to return to the roads – with the result that congestion levels will rise once again.
