The Retail Price Index (RPI) reported by the Office of National Statistics for December 2009 showed the highest increase between any two consecutive months since 1979.

A major contributory factor was transport, with hikes in fuel prices.

This was reported before the reversion of VAT duty back up to 17.5%, which took place in January, which will undoubtedly influence the RPI for January.
